Molasses-Bran Brown Bread

  • 1 cup All-Bran
  • 1/2 cup dates or seedless raisins
  • 2 T shortening
  • 1/2 cup Grandma’s Molasses
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup sifted flour
  • 1 t baking soda
  • 1/2 t salt
  • 1/2 t cinnamon

Measure bran, raisins, shortening, and molasses into mixing bowl. Add hot water and stir until shortening is melted. Add egg and beat well. Sift together flour, soda, salt, cinnamon. Add dry ingredients to bran-molasses mixture, stirring only until combined.

For round loaves, fill 2 greased baked bean cans about 2/3 full. Bake at 350° about 45 minutes. Yields 2 loaves. For loaf bread grease a 9 1/2 x 4 1/2 inch loaf pan and bake at 350° for 35 minutes. For square loaf, grease an 8x8 inch square pan and bake at 350° for 35 minutes.
