Sugar Cookies

  • 3/4 cup soft shortening (part butter) 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 t flavoring (lemon or vanilla)
  • 1 t salt
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 t baking powder

Mix thoroughly shortening, sugar, eggs, flavoring. Stir in flour, baking powder, and salt. Chill at least 1 hour. Roll out 1/8" thick. Cut into Christmas shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 6-8 minutes at 400°. When cool, ice.

Icing:

  • 1 cup sifted powdered sugar
  • 1/2 t vanilla, lemon, almond, or peppermint flavoring
  • Milk or water
  • Food coloring

Mix together using enough liquid to make icing easy to spread. Add food coloring. Spread on cookies.
