Apple Pie
- 5 apples, peeled and cored (I like to use Granny Smiths)
- 1 deep dish crust
- 1 shallow dish crust
- 1/2 cup sugar (use less if apples are sweet – Grandma used 2 T only)
- 2 T cornstarch
- Dash salt
- 1 1/4 t cinnamon, divided
- 2 T butter
- 1 T half & half or milk
Cut up 2 1/2 apples into pie crust. Mix together sugar (reserving 2 T for top), cornstarch, salt, and 1 t cinnamon together.' Sprinkle about 1/2 of mixture.on top of apples. Slice remaining apple into pie crust and spnnkle wIth the rest of the sugar mixture. Sprinkle 3 T water over pie. Dot with butler. Cover with other pie crust and vent top well. Pat half & half or milk over crust with your hand and sprinkle a mixture of 2 T sugar with 1/4 t cinnamon over all. Bake at 400° for 15 minutes, then at 350° for 30 minutes.
You may substitute pears for part of the apples (I never have five apples on hand).
